Their last LP - 2025’s ‘Fate Unknown’ - saw the LA five-piece reaching out from behind their wall of hardcore-soaked noise to find a wider range of influences, and that looks set to continue with this wild’n’wonderful follow-up. Sure, they still sound like they’ve exchanged firm handshakes with Discharge. Sunk a few strong ones with Motorhead. Stripped naked and tried to figure out how sword dancing works while juggling Molotov cocktails with Poison Idea. The immediate impact of their noise suggests all of that. If this summer’s endless bout of heatwaves seems an odd setting for a new Altar Of Eden record, maybe we should consider that the fast-accelerating destruction of life on Earth is an appropriate setting for more deathrock. The eagle-eyed among you might recognise guitarist Ben Redman from recent lineups of symphonic noiseniks …And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, while vocalist Albert Efraim has been making a thrillingly unholy racket with Texan hardcore faves like the Creamers and Nosferatu - and they both played together in gothed-out sensations Altar Duata before that band’s untimely demise. Altar Of Eden have thus far produced two mighty LPs of smartly chilling post-punk for Drunken Sailor - 2020’s wondrous The Grotto Screams and 2022’s superb follow-up Chimeras - but now they return with a sequel to their debut: The Grotto Screams II.
The Grotto Screams II LP by Altar of Eden
In keeping with their previous offerings, it’s superb. Redman’s guitar is brittle and minimal, but lurches into eardrum-lacerating strafes of deafening, brutal noise without warning, while Jake Cloud brings driving, pulsating basslines to the fore, dripping with the influence of Killing Joke’s Youth as they hold it all together somehow. Efraim intones his lyrics solemnly over the top, drenched in reverb and tucked deep into the mix; as much a texture as a means of delivering hooks. He’s cited the poetry of Jean-Pierre Duprey and Rene Daumal as influences in the past, and tracks like The Erasure and Light And Shade certainly contain their own suffocating sense of surrealism and obfuscated reality. It all builds to the epic finale of closing track The Moon, which handles their signature tricks in moodily grandiose fashion - a bleakly compelling version of post-punk that sears and soars even as it chills the heart. Arguably Duprey’s most famous line goes, “I shouldn't have got stuck in this galaxy,” and as humanity brings about its own destruction, it’s worth suggesting that this applies to us all. The more studious among you - fuckin’ nerds - will know that one of the main reasons anyone heard of this punk rock thing in the first place is that four dudes from Queens (subtle clue: each adopted the name ‘Ramone’) decided they wanted to recreate the classic radio pop music they’d grown up with, and duly did so with the power and crunch of prime ‘60s garage rock thrown in. Loose Lips have a pretty fine pedigree - guitarist Josh Hardy plays in smoko champs The Chats; bassist Ethan Stahl used to live in the UK, where he served time in London pub rockers Chubby & The Gang; and drummer Nadine Muller also makes a hell of a racket with Drunken Sailor’ powerpop titans The Prize. But the one thing they all have in common is a love of three things: classic pop like The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las, pummelling garage clatter a la The Standells, and good old-fashioned punk rock in the vein of the New York Dolls and The Scientists. However, ‘Love You’, their new four-tracker for Drunken Sailor, is definitely their finest work yet. Opener ‘Beehive’ sounds like Chris Bailey and Ed Kuepper took way too much speed in the Brill Building, while ‘Looking For’ and ‘Remember We Love You’ bend effortless melody into wiry but pointedly powerful rhythms to make a concoction J.J. O’Neill would’ve desperately loved to chug. Then there’s ‘Tired Of Toein’ The Line’, an absolute all-timer that soars and swoops from a vigorous singalong into guitar lines that Chris Stein must’ve lost down the back of a sofa in the Australian state of Victoria, shortly before these guys unearthed ‘em. It’s catchy, it’s classic, it’s coming out of your speakers and setting off firecrackers in your exhaust pipe. Whether drawn from direct experience or keen-eyed observation, the songs tumble forth with laser focus - ‘Free Speech Zone’ skewers the concept of paramilitary threats to civil liberty, while ‘Old Wounds’ explores the personal and social burdens of traumatic experience through righteous vexation. That aforementioned hope is palpable too, though, as the juddering crunch of ‘Bubbles’ finds Skolnik declaring: “Humanity will win, I believe it.” It’s a key moment.

For all their deployment of new ideas, Daddy’s Boy still ultimately sound like someone liquefied and mixed together the various sounds of classic Chicago post-punk, before launching the glowing, molten results out of a cannon (and yes, that’s a good thing).
