LOS CRUDOS, formed in Chicago's Pilsen neighbourhood in the early 90's, are a Latino punk band with a strong socio-political message and an extremely militant DIY attitude. During their first incarnation, spanning the years 1991 to 1998 the band self-released their own records, printed their own merch, booked their own shows and toured relentlessly around the world. From South America to Japan including a 3 month European tour in the winter of 1996. They spoke to the freaks the outsiders and the minorities and were not afraid of confronting the white middle class punk who reigned supreme during the terrible 90's. A time which will not be remembered for their hardcore output except for a few exceptions, in which CRUDOS are surely included. Their sound, far from being a copycat of whatever flavour of the month was reigning at the time was heavy rooted in the golden years of European and Latino American ferocious hardcore punk. With bands as IMPACT, WRETCHED, OLHO SECO, TERVEET KADET or MASACRE 68 as obvious influences in a time when the simple mention of any of those bands (or any non English speaking bands really) was usually met with a laugh or a joke. They sang in Spanish, with aggression and conviction and that made their message spread out widely, reaching thousands of Spanish speaking punks both in Latino America and Spain as well as inside USA where third generation Latino kids surely were missing a voice within the punk scene. A band of highs and lows: High concept in performance and lowbrow in execution. In my eyes, BARCELONA is simply a genius project, capable of creating their own universe then vomiting all over it. Their formula is distortion to the max, total free-ness and improvisation, with regurgitated bass lines and repetitive primitive beats, topped with the sharpest and nastiest lyrics on observations of our own futility and misery. In their universe, you can find HERMANN NITSCH and the entire catalogue of ESP DISKS hanging out with MANOLO KABEZABOLO and ESKORBUTO. Probably without them even being aware of it. All of the above is what you’ll find in the 13 songs on this disturbing record that comes wrapped in artwork by the last true artist on earth Oriol Roca. The Atrocity Exhibit swerve the use of blistering speed sometimes shown in their past work and instead spit out the snail-paced 'Throne Of Bile', a masterclass in tension-filled suffering; a track rippling with a violent, unpredictable swagger that's constantly threatening to explode in your face. Iron Witch offer no respite, with 'Her Cheating Heart' being perhaps their best song yet; a track of such colossal heaviness and down-tuned, down-beat, forceful depression that's it's like having your face forced down into the muck that lines the banks of the Mersey. Like their fellow noise-punks in Eel (with whom Pissbath shared a memorable split), these folks are pretty much straight up in the Confuse / Gai / Swankys vein. It seems like there was so much of this stuff around a few years ago that you could barely distinguish one band from another, but thankfully that's died down a bit and I feel like I can listen to this with fresh ears. At its best, this style combines the simplicity and directness of the best early punk and UK82 with a sensibility somewhat akin to outsider art... in other words, you can never quite be sure whether the people making this music are complete geniuses or total idiots. Pissbath definitely fall on that line... you can't help but appreciate that truly bizarre guitar tone and some of those riffs are total face-melters, but at the end of the day 99.9% of the earth's population will wonder why one would subject themselves to this, much less pay money for it. I must admit that I do have a healthy appetite for this style when it's done right, and Pissbath definitely do it right.

For fans of Empty Lungs, The Flatliners Good Livin' e.p by BANGERS
RAKA008: Päättäjät on kännissä ep 7″ by Eyewitness
4 track 7" Discharge worship <a href="http://blindeadproductions.bandcamp.com/album/beijando-a-morte-7">Beijando A Morte 7" by Massacre Divine</a>

Repress!
